Strategic Sikkim Airport Resumes Operation

The lone Green airport in the strategic border state of Sikkim resumed its operation on Saturday. The airport was not in operation for over 21 months. At 4646 ft, Pakyong Airport is one of the five highest airports in India. It is also the first Greenfield airport constructed in the northeastern region. The flight landed with 57 passengers and gone back with 21 passengers on Saturday. Pakyong Green Field airport had to widen the runway strip up to 40 meters before resuming operation. From now Spice Jet will operate daily operations from Pakyong to New Delhi. The airport also serves as an important facility for the Indian Army. The airport lies only 60 km away from the India-China border. The airport is flanked by deep valleys at both ends of the runway
